Breast Self Examination (BSE) is not a screening test for breast cancer. It is a regular monthly discipline that helps you become familiar with the way your breasts normally look and feel. Knowing what is normal for you may help you detect changes in your breasts that could be early symptoms for breast cancer.

Learn the right technique of Breast Self Examination and make this a monthly discipline. Make an appointment with your doctor yearly for a routine check-up and go for regular mammograms recommended for your age group. Last but not least, make it a conscious daily effort towards a healthy diet and activity level and you will be grateful for the material difference these strategies make!
You may begin monthly BSE from the age of 20 and continue for the rest of your life; even after menopause. It is best done 5-7 days after your period starts to avoid breast tenderness and discomfort during the examination. Women on oral contraceptives should do BSE on the first day of a new pill pack. For postmenopausal women, simply pick the same day each month.
